University of Zurich
Sleep & Health Zurich (SHZ)
Zurich, Switzerland
Affiliation & Collaboration:
A Center of Competence at the University of Zurich (UZH), bridging the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology with the University Hospital Zurich (USZ). It is a core pillar of the Neuroscience Center Zurich (ZNZ).
Research areas:
Human sleep psychopharmacology, sleep physiology, and the interaction between sleep and neurological health.
Current focus:
Operating the “SleepLoop” initiative, which investigates closed-loop auditory stimulation to enhance deep sleep and brain function. The center is also leading research into how sleep affects metabolic health and cardiovascular risk.
University of Geneva
Sleep, Cognition and Neuroimaging Laboratory (SCNLab)
Geneva, Switzerland
Affiliation & Collaboration:
Affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and the Geneva University Neurocenter. It operates within the Brain and Behaviour Laboratory (BBL) and collaborates with the Swiss Center for Affective Sciences.
Research areas:
Cognitive neuroscience of sleep, memory consolidation, emotional regulation, and dreaming.
Current focus:
Mapping the neural mechanisms of “memory replay” during sleep using multimodal neuroimaging (fMRI/hd-EEG). Led by Prof. Sophie Schwartz, the lab explores how the brain prioritizes emotional information for stabilization during sleep.
University of Basel
Centre for Chronobiology
Basel, Switzerland
Affiliation & Collaboration:
Based at the Psychiatric Hospital of the University of Basel (UPK). It is a world leader in circadian science and collaborates with the Swiss Society for Sleep Research, Sleep Medicine and Chronobiology (SSSSC).
Research areas:
Circadian rhythms, light-dark cycles, sleep regulation, and the impact of the biological clock on mental health.
Current focus:
Investigating the effects of artificial light and screen time on human sleep architecture. The center is currently focused on optimizing light-based therapies for circadian rhythm disorders and improving sleep quality in psychiatric patients.
