Sleep and Work | Chris Barnes | TEDx
Today, leaders often boast about their minimal sleep as a symbol of their dedication and work ethic. However, this approach
Sleep affects every aspect of our health, wellbeing, performance and safety. The Sleep Society brings together the many disciplines involved in sleep health, creating connections between professionals and making those connections more accessible to the public.
For sleep professionals, The Sleep Society is a global interdisciplinary community designed to increase awareness and visibility, encourage communication, strengthen understanding and support collaboration, while connecting clinical expertise, research and education across disciplines and around the world, and bringing those connections, benefits and assistance home to local providers and ‘Sleep Teams’.
Connect with trusted sleep professional based on your needs and location.
Access practical information, articles, and insights on sleep and health.
Join a global network, increase your visibility, and connect across disciplines.
The Sleep Society (TSS) is a global, multidisciplinary network connecting sleep professionals across dental, medical, behavioural, respiratory, technical, and research disciplines. Sleep disorders do not exist in isolation, and effective care requires the same integration.
There are many excellent discipline-specific associations, and The Sleep Society neither attempts to compete with, nor duplicate what those organisations already provide. The Sleep Society encourages and supports sleep professionals to join and remain active both within their own professional and national groups, to increase awareness and advocacy of their professions. The Sleep Society provides sleep association information from local, national and global groups with membership details and links.
The Sleep Society also advocates for the formation of local ‘Sleep Teams’, a concept already supported and encouraged within sleep medicine by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), and provides a platform to support their independent development.
We can’t all work in a multidisciplinary clinic, but we can all work within a multidisciplinary group or Sleep Team.
Collaborating across specialties and with national and international sleep societies strengthens research and education, and through our global directory and shared platform, members raise their visibility with the public, expand professional connections and communication, and share their strengths and plans.
We encourage and support our members to use this connection to develop their own local collaborative networks and hope to continue to serve our members as they, in turn, pass their experience, skill and knowledge to others, without additional cost or governance. The Sleep Society believes these opportunities are of benefit to ourselves, our disciplines, our patients and the wider appreciation of sleep within society, both locally and globally.
Quality sleep is a biological necessity essential to sustaining physical health, cognitive performance, and emotional regulation. Its impact extends beyond the individual to influence safety, productivity, and public systems.
In modern high-risk environments, including transportation, emergency response, healthcare, and industry, impaired sleep contributes directly to preventable harm. Yet despite remarkable advances in sleep science and sleep medicine over recent decades, millions of people continue to live with undiagnosed sleep disorders, inadequate sleep or poor sleep health.
For many years, inadequate sleep was regarded largely as an individual problem. Someone who was tired was often expected simply to sleep more and catch up, work less or manage their time better. While personal responsibility remains important, advances in sleep science and sleep medicine have shown that the reality is far more complex.
Sleep is influenced by many biological, medical, psychological, occupational, environmental, pathological and social factors. Sleep disorders, circadian rhythm disruption, shift work, chronic sleep restriction, mental health issues, medications, lifestyle and many other influences may all contribute to impaired sleep and impaired daytime performance.
Recognising these factors has fundamentally changed our understanding of sleep: not as time that can simply be sacrificed or replaced, but as a biological necessity whose disruption can affect almost every aspect of our health, wellbeing, performance and safety.
For the public, The Sleep Society is designed to help you find the right sleep care for you, while also offering trusted resources, education, and professional connections. We all know sleep matters, but finding the right help is not always easy.
We accept that no one can provide all the services we might require, and so we encourage and support our members to be the best they can be and, wherever possible, to be part of a ‘Sleep Team’ so that care can be comprehensive. Sleep is complex, and its treatment and management can be too.
Sleep care spans many different professionals, and this makes the search more confusing than it should be. Our directory is intended to simplify that process by helping you understand who does what, how different experts work together, and where to turn when looking for better sleep or the right provider. Ultimately, we hope this will become a directory of ‘Sleep Teams’.
The Sleep Society offers a unique blend of resources and opportunities designed to enhance professional growth, patient care, interdisciplinary understanding and collaboration. For the sleep health professional, we provide:
