RUSI is currently the most prominent academic sleep facility in the country, leading the Sleep Revolution, the largest research project ever awarded in Iceland (funded by a €15M EU grant).

The research focus is on an interdisciplinary hub where engineers, computer scientists, and psychologists collaborate to replace old diagnostic metrics (like AHI) with machine learning models. There is focus on the impact of extreme light variations (24-hour sun vs. darkness) on the Icelandic population’s circadian rhythms.

Academic tracks offer specialized research positions and teaching sleep technology and neurocognitive testing.

University of Iceland (Háskóli Íslands)

While Landspítali handles the clinical side, the University of Iceland provides the academic framework for deep physiological studies. and key projects include investigating the link between trauma and sleep disorders and the high prevalence of Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) in northern latitudes.

The University of Iceland (Háskóli Íslands) has a long-standing partnership with the Penn Sleep Centres  to manage the Icelandic Sleep Apnea Cohort, one of the world’s most detailed long-term databases of sleep apnea patients.
